Wavelet-based Fully-scalable Video Coding with In-band Prediction

New results on scalable video-coding techniques are presented. Instead of the classical 3-D discrete wavelet transform (DWT) decomposition paradigm that is often proposed in the literature as the best solution for finegranularity scalability in wavelet-based video compression, we propose a coding scheme based on the hybrid coding structure with motion estimation and compensation performed in the transform domain (in-band) using the overcomplete DWT. We explain the motivation behind our approach and experimental results demonstrate that a simple realization of the proposed coding scheme can decode to a variety of bit-rates and resolutions achieving at the same time competitive performance compared to stateof-the-art scalable coding standards.
